Conical mesioden

The closest thing to a unicorn you’ll find in dentistry 🦄

CC: “My son has an extra tooth!”

Dx: conical mesioden

Tx: extraction of mesioden

🔑: Here are some quick facts on conical mesiodens!

  1. The prevalence of mesiodens ranges from 0.15% to 1.9% in the general population.

  2. Mesiodens are more frequently found in males with a sex ratio around 2-5:1.

  3. An autosomal dominant (with incomplete penetrance) and X-linked inheritance pattern has been observed (may explain the increased prevalence in males!).

  4. Complications include delayed eruption, impaction, and displacement of adjacent permanent teeth. In this case, #9 is visibly displaced in the buccal direction.

When a conical mesioden has erupted like the one in this photograph, its extraction is fairly straightforward. The technique is similar to extracting a canine, requiring just a quick rotation.
