Case selection

Patient selection is crucial in providing quality care. It's important to choose cases you can finish with confidence. Treating kids can be compared to flying planes - before takeoff, you need to know you have enough fuel and clear weather to get to your destination safely. Similarly, before starting treatment, you should be confident the child can tolerate the treatment safely.

Testing a child's tolerance can be tricky, but there are ways to test the waters. Did they do well for their cleaning? Did they take good x-rays? Do they tolerate the nitrous hood or isodry? Test their tolerance with the air-water syringe. Spray water on their teeth with the isodry in and see if they tolerate the water. Next, use a slow speed handpiece and tap the rotating round bur slowly on their teeth and see if they tolerate the vibration.

Remember, taking on cases you can't finish can be harmful. Choose wisely and provide quality care to those you treat.
